The first painting of its kind, the watercolour still-life of a clump of grass by Albrecht Dürer.

I'm terrible with art but this painting struck me so much, this depiction of such a familiar sight even 500 years later.

It's a watercolour which is so life-like and realistic (that in itself is unusual!). Straight away you know these plants as if you were right there, the dandelion, plantain, speedwell, germander, yarrow.

But Dürer painted scenes from the apocalypse, the Assumption of the Virgin, Adam and Eve, he was certainly initiated into the esoteric traditions.

What did he see in this clump of grass?
What did this represent?
Why would he spend time painting this?

The first time we find a painting like this....and it's simply depicting common weeds.

There are lots of ideas about why he painted it. Perhaps he used it as a way to practice his technique other works of art. Or is he showing us how the ordinary can be magnificent. The art critic Christopher Knight wrote that the framing of the plants suggests a gothic cathedral.

Either way, people have pondered the meaning of this.

But maybe we need to look at the plants themselves. We see it as an ordinary scene....but did Dürer?

Let's take plantain for example. Dürer was German, so for him plantain was a known companion for souls on their journey to the realm of the dead. The Roman's called plantain the son of Orcus, the ruler of the underworld. Dürer would know of plantain's healing power for travellers on long journeys and its ability to fix injuries, punctures, bites and soothe heavy legs.

Hieronymus Bock said 'I need not mention that there is hardly a person who does not know what Plantain is good for.'

This is a plant that is anything but ordinary and we can dive into the myths, legends, healing powers and planetary symbolism of all these weeds.

For me a bridge into history can be through plants, they are the one thing that is consistent- everything else I'm not so sure about!

We can use the same medicinal plants and get the same results that Paracelsus, Culpeper or Hildergaard of Bingen did.

In a world where everything changes, this is nice to know!
